Smile please

Big smiles were the order of the day when two Preston children's centres
were awarded Smile4Life awards.

Ribbleton Children's Centre, in Ribbleton Hall Drive, and Sunshine
Children's Centre in Brant Road were recognised yesterday for their work
in helping under-fives establish good dental and general health.

They are the first in the county to have gained the award.

The programme is a partnership between Lancashire County Council and NHS
Central Lancashire, NHS North Lancashire and NHS East Lancashire to
ensure that tooth-brushing, visiting the dentist and eating healthily
becomes second nature to the county's children.

Settings such as nurseries and children's centres have been encouraging
children to bring their toothbrushes with them, so they can brush after
breakfast or lunch as well as reminding parents of the importance of
dental health.

County Councillor Susie Charles, Cabinet member for children and
schools, said: "It is lovely to hear that two of our children's centres
have gained the Smile4Life award, having seen the children's enthusiasm
last year.

"Teeth are with us for life - hopefully - and that's why it's so
important that children learn these important dental health messages at
an early age."

Eric Rooney, NHS Central Lancashire consultant in dental public health,
said: "Poor oral health impacts on the quality of children's lives and
this programme has the potential to change that. We know that dental
decay can be prevented by encouraging healthy eating and drinking and by
the use of fluoride toothpaste. By working with the county council we
can support children from an early age to have good teeth and a
healthier lifestyle."

Smile4Life was officially launched last October at the Woodlands Centre
in Chorley, by Lord (now Earl) Howe. He also paid a visit to Ribbleton
Children's Centre where he met with staff and children to see first-hand
how members of the local NHS dental team and nursery teachers work
together to encourage better oral health in children.

At the launch, he said: "Tooth decay in children is a serious problem.
It can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort, and treating it is
very costly for the NHS. Focusing on prevention is not only better for
the children, but is also better use of NHS resources.

"I'm delighted to see the Lancashire County Council and the NHS taking
innovative action to address this very important local health issue, and
I hope others will follow suit."

The books include: * planning support * activity ideas * photocopiables * display ideas * support for differentiation * suggestions for resources Food provides lesson ideas which specifically link to the QCA topics of: * Science: Health and growth * Design and technology: Eat more fruit and vegetables The book shows how these two curriculum subjects can be taught in a discrete yet cohesive way enabling efficient time management of the curriculum.
